General Background

I am an award-winning K-12 teacher, who tutors just the same as I run a classroom - with positivity, professionalism, and patience. I focus on identifying your individual needs, setting goals, and meeting them as quickly as possible, because I don't want you to always need me around - I want you to gain the skills and confidence to move on!

I have worked at summer camps and schools my entire life, and consider myself a Fun Consultant - I help you bring positivity and professionalism into your current goals. My attention is not just on the content, but also on the student's interest. I strive to make the boring exciting, to make the difficult achievable. If I see that my student is starting to fade, I will get us up and do jumping jacks. My years of experience in youth development, classrooms, and the outdoors have taught me how to adapt to individual needs and spontaneously incorporate exciting and relevant activities. Yet with all of this positivity, I don’t neglect the content, and the importance of reaching your goals in a timely manner. I am patient and passionate about helping you build the content and confidence to be successful with your studies.

I am an experienced teacher for all ages, with California credentials in both Elementary and Secondary grades. After graduating cum laude from Occidental College, I ran a tutoring business in Pasadena, worked at a local summer camp, and then received my Master's in Education at Harvard University. The next year, I returned to my alma mater, Occidental College, to complete an extra year of teaching preparation towards double credentials. In addition, I began preparing adults for the GRE, and assisting them in graduate school admissions through essay and resume review, with students gaining entrance to Ivy Leagues and other competitive programs. Afterwards, I taught reading intervention, English as a Second Language, and theater to middle schoolers; my greatest achievement was improving the reading level and test scores of over 1000 public school students - some gained over 5 years of reading skills in only 10 months! I am comfortable teaching all ages, all grades, all subjects. If you are looking for a fun, yet disciplined tutor to help you close your gaps, set specific and timely goals, an get to know you and your learning style, then say hi!

Academic Training

I am a California certified teacher for ESL/ESOL for K-12 students. I have worked with hundreds of students to successfully learn English as a Second Language. I am trained in the most basic of English Language methods, such as Phonics, to the most advanced of grammatical structures, such as literature analysis.

I was one of the first teachers in California to implement Common Core lessons and assessments; I am a former teacher of Green Dot Public Schools, which led the way in training its teachers for the transition to Common Core. My advanced theater students consistently scored A's on my Common Core assessments because I had prepared them with personalized projects, readings, and writing assignments. As for the GRE, I was trained through Kaplan Test Prep, and achieved the highest ranking of Expert Teacher.

I studied French throughout my educational career, and lived in France for a semester. I don't get a lot of opportunities to speak French in the US, so I would love to help you out, and share some of my favorite stories, poems, books, artists, and travel stories (in French of course)!

Logistics

I love coffee shops and libraries, so I am happy to drive to you. I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. Online lessons are an excellent solution for anyone outside of my driving range, and I look forward to helping students across the country. I strive to make sure that communication is clear and concise, so that we are always on the same page with your goals, schedule, and logistics.

Subject-Specific Background

CBEST: I studied and successfully passed the CBEST in the top percentiles. My training was with a highly-respected and published professor at Occidental College.

Common Core: I was trained in my public middle school in the transition to Common Core two years ago. Since then, I wrote all lessons and assessments using Common Core standards. I assisted my district in creating document-based questions for my subjects - reading and theatre.

Elementary (K-6th): I have my California Elementary credentials, and I have taught K-8 grade in public schools. I received the highest award in my district for teaching, based on all-stakeholder surveys, supervisor observations, and student test scores.

English: My Single Subject California Teaching Credentials are for English, so I am very well-trained in the subject. I have spent my teaching career working with students in all aspects of English - reading, writing, phonics, common core, and more. I love writing, and I love editing and revising other people's writing even more!

GRE: I have helped hundreds of students gain entrance into graduate programs through GRE preparation. This is about finding the right answer; it's not about how smart you are. Any student can improve their score, and I know the tricks to get you more points. In addition, I love reviewing essays and applications!

Handwriting: I taught first grade, tutored K-12, and am the daughter of an English teacher who assigned me handwriting for "fun" on the weekends. I love helping students with those brown, lined handwriting pages.

ISEE: I teach all three levels of the ISEE - lower, middle, and upper - and focus on the test-taking strategies that will save time and build confidence. I tutored students in the ISEE toward successful private school admission in CA.

Study Skills: I have assisted in the implementation of Study Skills workshops. During eight-week lessons, I taught students not only specific tools for studying, such as flashcards and Cornell notes, but also how to self-reflect about what strategies are best for them, such as listening to music, organization, and practicing material in different locations. When I taught the GRE to adults, I also implemented and taught important study skills, such as reading something 30 minutes before bed, carrying around flashcards, and methods to quiz yourself.
